Dialogues Album
This album (as the title suggests) explores a conversational approach to interpreting music written by both Jim, Ivo and composers as diverse as Glazunov and Wayne Shorter. The quality of the music relies on this improvised dialogue between the musicians – much like an unscripted conversation. It’s the way that the musicians listen and respond to unknown situations that provide the excitement in jazz and improvised music. This recording represents an effort to capture the tension that musicians feel when playing unscripted music, relying on their musical intuition to create something interesting in the moment. Ultimately it comes down to chance whether the musicians will create something extraordinary or not – there could be any number of ill winds that prevent the musicians from being able to achieve the requisite focus to express the inexpressible. As musicians become older and more experienced they become more adept at calculating the capacity for things to go pear-shaped – they become better at narrowing the odds of failure. As they hone their musical instincts and ability over the course of a lifetime, they are better able to shape these improvised dialogues.
